Mattie Freeland Community Garden
English Avenue Community | Atlanta, GA
This garden was started in 2008 with the vision of improving a small vacant, dusty lot. Since then, raised beds filled with vegetables and herbs have replaced abandoned cars and garbage. In the summer of 2009, an area property owner asked us to expand onto an adjacent lot because he saw the many benefits of having a garden in the neighborhood. More than a garden, this space is a place for neighbors to meet one another and connect.
Our Garden
The garden is comprised of eleven raised beds planted with vegetables, flowers and herbs; a small neighborhood greenspace and picnic area and a large field for kids to play. The space has taken shape in the past few years as partnerships have yielded dozens of new healthy trees, playground equipment, benches and tables, and a community tool shed.
We look forward to this spring, as we anticipate adding fencing around some garden plots and improving community spaces.
This garden exists to provide a safe place for neighbors to connect, and for children to learn about the earth and how to care for it.
